Illinois Audubon 2015 article

Great background information article about the beginning of the Amboy Marsh Nature Preserve.

What's in a Name?

Many of us are familiar with the name Amboy Marsh. It was given to the original 272 acres first purchased in 2012. In 2013, the Hatch 30 acres was acquired. Later a 20-acre parcel was acquired from the Ryback family. Next, the wonderful 400-acre Gremel Nature Preserve was acquired.  Then the 30 acres next to Gremel owned by Mr. Gabelmann.  An 80-acre parcel was purchased from the Grigalauski family. Later, a 136-acre parcel was acquired as Queen of the Prairie. The latest acquisition, Sinadinos, is 60 acres adjacent to Queen of the Prairie.   We have a lot of parcels with a lot of names totaling 1,027 acres!  Illinois Audubon Society suggested that we have a single name to cover all the parcels - Green River Lowlands Preserve. We are located in the Green River Lowlands section of the Grand Prairie Division when looking at the natural divisions of Illinois.

It is much easier for us to label our entire holdings as Green River Lowlands Preserve. BUT this does not mean we have discarded the original names. It is convenient to know what parcel you are working on, or where you are by referring to Amboy Marsh, Hatch, Zellhofer, Gabelmann, Grigalauski, Gremel, Sinadinos or Ryback.
