Knowing some things ahead of time will help you have a great visit to Amboy Marsh or Gremel Sanctuary.

Most importantly, there is a porta-potty at Amboy Marsh, but not at Gremel.

There is no water available at either site.

There are gravel parking lots at each site.  Begin your hikes at the parking lots.

Things To Bring

Bring water if you think you will get thirsty.  There is no potable water available.

1.

Binoculars will help you get up close and personal without scaring wildlife away.

2.

A camera will help you record and remember your experiences.

3.

In season, you may want bug spray (mosquitoes and ticks) and sunscreen.

4.

A compass and field guides might help you find your way and help you learn what you see along the way.

5.

Raingear.  There is no bad weather, just bad clothing choices!  Be prepared and you'll still have fun, even in the rain.

6.

How You Can Help

1.

Stay on trails.  It helps when people don't walk through sensitive habitat at these sites.

2.

Leave all pets at home.  Even yours.  Even on a leash.  Sensitive habitat and endangered species are bothered by dogs.

3.

Take all trash back out with you.

4.

Take photos, but do not collect any plants or animals.

5.

Keep a respectful distance from animals and noise at a minimum.  This is their home, not ours.

6.

Write in the journal at the visitor center kiosk of the Amboy Marsh site. What did you see?

7.

Join the Birdsong Chapter of Illinois Audubon Society. https://illinoisaudubon.org/join/membership-options/

Please Don't

1.

Please don't ride a bike, horse, snowmobile, car or ATV.

2.

Please don't bring your dog. We love them too, but they are harmful for the habitat.

3.

Please don't camp,  hunt, fish, or make a fire.

4.

Please don't pick flowers, berries, nuts or mushrooms.

5.

Please don't trespass on private property next to the preserve.

6.

Please don't hike on closed trails.  Not all trails are open at all times. Closed trails will have a sign so you know.

7.

The above things aren't allowed for the safety of animals and plants protected here.
