Bluebirds
It is time for action! Even though the snow and ice are very evident, it’s time to clean and ready your bluebird houses for early arrivals. And yes, we all see a few bluebirds that hang around all winter long.
Please use the resources at www.sialis.org
Sialia sialis is the scientific name for bluebird, and this organization named Sialis can provide the best info on house plans, installation and predator control.
Safe nest boxes are a must; it is heartbreaking when a raccoon, snake or cat robs the nest of eggs or babies. Monitoring is critical – don’t erect nest boxes unless you maintain them by removing English sparrow nests, and keep the boxes clean and in good repair.
The Sialis webpage is filled with great tidbits of bluebird history.
1859: Henry David Thoreau wrote “His soft warble melts the ear, as the snow is melting in the valleys around”.
1939: Judy Garland sang “Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly” in the movie Wizard of Oz.
1964: Frank Sinatra wished us in song “bluebirds in the Spring”.
